Travis is named for the Ōruapaeroa/Travis Wetland, a 116 hectare Nature Heritage Park that is the last large freshwater wetland in Christchurch. Travis is not a separate old village. It is the edge of Burwood where homes meet the wetland, with the main entrance on Beach Road and further access from Mairehau Road. The council bought the land in 1996, after it had been drained for dairy farming. For anyone living beside it, the wetland is a pleasure and a source of damp.

How does living beside a wetland change carpet care?

The ground here was marsh, so humidity is higher and floors stay cooler. Bedrooms on the wetland side can feel clammy in winter, and carpet takes longer to dry. We use hot water extraction to remove soil and as much water as possible, and open windows or a dehumidifier will help afterwards. For a cold room, the low-moisture option dries quicker.

Wetland walkers and nearby forest paths bring in sand, mud and seeds. Hallway runners and entry mats wear first and can be cleaned off the floor, which is often cheaper than replacing them.

What we get called out for in Travis

For the wider area see Burwood, Marshland and Parklands.

Because Travis is on the edge of a conservation area, the area has more birds, insects and plant seeds than most suburbs, and these end up on window ledges and in entry carpet. Dogs are not allowed in the wetland, but they are in neighbouring streets and reserves, and dog owners still see paw marks and grass staining. We recommend a boot mat at the door and a vacuum with good suction, because removing dry soil early makes later cleaning easier and cheaper.

If you are not sure whether your problem is the carpet or the house, call us. We will check for damp, smell and wear, and give you a clear recommendation. Sometimes the answer is a simple clean, and sometimes it is ventilation or a dehumidifier.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the wetland make my carpet damper?

It can raise humidity, especially in winter and in shaded rooms. Good ventilation, a heat pump or dehumidifier and regular cleaning help. We can check the underlay if a smell keeps returning.

Can you clean entry mats that get muddy from wetland walks?

Yes. Small rugs and mats can be cleaned off the floor and returned dry. Heavy mud is brushed out first, then the rug is washed and extracted. Ask us before you book.

Do you charge a call-out fee for Travis?

No. Travis is inside our standard service area, so there is no call-out fee. Quotes are free and the price is confirmed before we start work. Ask us before you book.
