Huntsbury climbs the northern slope of the Port Hills, about three kilometres south of the city centre, and its history is unusual. The hillside held the Cashmere Sanatorium, a tuberculosis hospital that opened in 1914 with patients in open-air huts, and the first housing sections were sold in 1920. The 2023 census counted 2,541 people in 954 dwellings, up 25.3 per cent on 2013.
What does a Port Hills location mean for carpet and floors?
Hillside homes face the weather from several directions. Rain driven by the southerly can reach window sills and deck joinery, and steep sections send stormwater towards the house if drainage is not kept clear. The result can be damp patches along external walls and, now and then, water in lower-level rooms.
The 2011 earthquake also changed the suburb. By 2020 many Huntsbury houses had been repaired, though some sites were still empty and some retaining walls remained broken. Repaired houses often have mixed old and new flooring, with new carpet laid in rebuilt rooms alongside older carpet in the rest of the house. We match the cleaning method to each, and test for colour fastness before treating a room. Take the hills into account when you book. Steep sections mean we may need a few extra minutes to run hoses from the van, so we allow for it in the time we quote. If you have a view window or sun room that fades carpet, we point it out so you can consider blinds or UV film. We also tell you plainly if an area needs a plumber or builder before it needs us.
What we get called out for in Huntsbury
- Water coming in. Storm water and plumbing leaks on sloping sections call for flood restoration, available 24/7.
- Damp and musty rooms. Lower-floor bedrooms that hold smell are treated with odour elimination.
- Steep stairs and split levels. Many homes have internal steps, and a full deep clean includes them.
- Post-repair cleaning. After building work, builders clean removes plaster and sanding dust from carpet and hard floors.
- Views and entertaining. Rugs and lounge suites are handled with rug cleaning. Our Cashmere and Mount Pleasant pages cover the Port Hills suburbs next door.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the truck get up Huntsbury's steep streets?
Normally yes. Some streets and drives are narrow or steep, so tell us when you book and we will plan where to park. Hoses run from the van to the house, so a steep driveway rarely stops the job.
My lower-floor carpet smells damp. Can cleaning fix it?
Sometimes. If the smell is from soiling, cleaning and odour treatment work well. If it is from rising damp or a leak, the source needs fixing first. We check with a moisture meter and tell you honestly.
Do you clean after repairs or renovations?
Yes. After building or repair work, we recommend a builders clean first to remove plaster and sanding dust, followed by a carpet clean once all the tradespeople have finished. That way you avoid paying to clean the same carpet twice.
