Most of Brooklands is empty ground. The suburb had 1,080 residents at the 2006 census, 531 in 2013 and only 129 by 2018. Built on former swamp beside Brooklands Lagoon, it suffered land subsidence and liquefaction in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, and nearly 500 properties were zoned red during 2011. Most were bought out and cleared. We are upfront that the number of homes left is small, so this page is for the people who stayed and for owners of the few houses still standing.
Can people still live in Brooklands?
Yes, though not many do. Reports from 2015 said about 25 residents who had declined the Crown's buyout offers were still there. The City Council's district plan zone for the area protects the existing rights of privately owned properties, while discouraging new subdivision, intensification and development. So the community is not growing. The settlement began in the 1960s as modest fibrolite houses, and by the 2010s many were far more substantial, but only a fraction of them remain today. Anyone who stayed knows the ground better than we do, and we are happy to work around what they tell us about their own house.
For carpet, low ground and a high water table matter. Houses that sit on former swamp stay damp for longer, and heavy rain or a wet winter can leave a house with a smell that regular vacuuming never shifts. We will tell you honestly whether a clean will fix a problem or whether the cause is moisture that needs sorting first.
What we get called out for in Brooklands
- Damp and musty carpet. Low, wet ground leaves odours in underlay, and our odour elimination work treats them at the source.
- Water in the house. If rain or a plumbing failure floods a room, we run flood restoration 24/7.
- Older timber floors. Houses with original boards need careful hard floor cleaning rather than heavy water.
- Moving in or out. Occasional property changes still happen, and a move-in clean gets a house ready to live in.
Our nearest regular work is at Kainga and in Spencerville.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is anyone still living in Brooklands?
A small community remains. Most of the suburb was red-zoned in 2011 and cleared, but some owners declined the buyout and stayed. The 2018 census counted 129 residents. We serve those households, and nearby Kainga and Spencerville.
Do you still come out to Brooklands?
Yes. If you live or have a property there, we will come out for carpet cleaning, odour treatment or flood restoration. Quotes are free and there is no call-out fee.
Why does my carpet stay damp in Brooklands?
Low ground, a high water table and little airflow can keep the subfloor damp. Cleaning removes dirt and odour, but it will not stop moisture rising. We check moisture first and suggest ventilation, heating or repairs if needed.
